How much time do you spend worrying?
Why
Worry?
by Robert Taylor
How much time do you spend worrying about things? More
than likely too much time. Try to think back and remember all the things about
which you have worried. Undoubtedly more than you can possibly recall.
How much of it actually happened? Probably not very much. Can you see where we
are going with this line of thought?
If most of what we worry about never happens, then why waste our time worrying?
That time can be better used solving problems which have led to our worries.
For some weird reason we have the bad habit of looking for the worst possible
scenario. Let's say a loved one is supposed to be home at a certain time. That
time comes and passes, the loved one is not home and has not called to let us
know why they will be late.
When jealousy rears its ugly head we think our loved one is having an affair.
Our thoughts get uglier and uglier.
Or, let's say we are concerned for the loved one's safety. We immediately
visualize them in some terrible accident or perhaps in a hospital. We let these
thoughts completely terrorize us.
Then, lo and behold, our loved one arrives safe and sound. We are upset because
of the thoughts we have been having and go into a rage without first listening
to the reason for being late.
Once things have settled down, we find they had been caught in traffic or had
stopped to get us a gift, or some similar reason. This embarrasses us, and to
cover our embarrassment we berate them for not letting us know they would be
late. A pitiful cycle!
We can basically apply the above thoughts to anything about which we have ever
worried. We keep ourselves in a turmoil by constantly visualizing the worst
things we think can happen.
Why not turn this around? Think of the best that can happen. You may be
disappointed at times, however you are not thrown into the turmoil thinking the
worst brings upon you.
