Child Tax Credit Refunds

The Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003 increased the maximum Child Tax Credit for 2003 and 2004 to
$1,000 per child, up from $600 for tax year 2002. In 2003, checks up to $400 will be sent in the form of an advance
payment to qualifying individuals who claimed the Child Tax Credit on their 2002 tax return.
No action is needed on your side to receive this credit. The IRS will automatically determine if you're entitled to any
advance Child Tax Credit payment and, if so, will mail you a check.
Qualifying child--The child must be (1) a child, descendent, stepchild, or eligible foster child, (2) a U.S. citizen or
resident alien, (3) a child that the taxpayer can claim as a dependent, and (4) less than 17 years old.
The IRS claims to have already mailed the Child Tax Credit checks to most people who filed their return before April 15.
Checks will continue to go out to eligible taxpayers who filed after April. All of the Child Tax Credit checks are scheduled
to be sent by December 2003.
