15 quick tips on Job loss prevention
Simply put job loss prevention is thoughts, actions and ideas to prevent you from being laid off or fired from work. Competition in the workplace is fierce and there are several people just waiting in the wings to take your job if your fired. Below are fifteen job loss prevention tips that you can use at work immediately that will help you keep your job. For more job loss prevention information see the other Job links on this page.
Job loss prevention is something that you actively work at every day.
1. Learning to relate and communicate well with people can't be stressed enough when it comes to job loss prevention, yes
you need to relate even to your Boss and co-workers :o) avoid confrontations. A great book to read on this subject is Dale Carnegie’s “How to win friends and influence people” I have put a link
here job loss prevention book for your convenience but check your local library first. They will more than likely have a copy. You can also get this title on books on tape. While your at the library look for other books on job loss prevention. Until the last few years there hasn't been a lot written on
the subject of job loss prevention. During the past couple of years though authors saw their was a market for materials that had to do with job loss prevention because of all of the
job layoffs, unemployment
and corporate downsizing. Now the shelves are flooded with books, tapes, cds and even videos on Job loss prevention. When looking for these materials on job loss prevention do your searches
on subjects like job
retention or job tips. Searching by the words job loss prevention may turn up with nothing. The
reason that I am using the phrase job loss prevention is because so many people are searching the world wide web for
job loss prevention and they must be
coming up empty handed.
2. Very few companies lay people off at work by seniority any more. I
know of a lady who
worked seventeen years in at a near by plant but she was one of the first people
cut from the workforce. Job loss prevention was the furthest thing from her mind.
She thought she would work there forever. Her biggest problem was she was criticizing
her workplace. The last thing that a company wants when it is going through tough times is being bashed and put down by it’s own employees
who work there and that's exactly what she was doing. After all, working conditions may not be perfect but at least you have a job and most of the ambitious unemployed
workers I know would be more than willing to trade places with you and all of your petty
problems with your company and the people who work there.
3. This tip is pretty straight forward. Don’t gossip about others...on or off the job, whether you work with them or not. It promotes a lack of trusting you. If you talk about others at work when they are not around what do
your friends think you say about them and the work they do when they are not around. gossip is destructive and not a good thing to do if your interested in job loss prevention or
having good friends at work.
4. Be a good listener at work. This is one key in job loss prevention. Don’t do the
work you think
your boss wants done. "Listen" and do the work that he or she wants done. There is a huge difference. Do this and you won't have to worry about work or job loss prevention ever
again.
5. Set goals at work, show your boss how your work goals align with the company goals. Most of your fellow workers don’t even set goals at work or personally. When the chopping block at work does come around again your giving yourself a good edge if you’re a goal setter. Some would say I don't have a job or do the type of work where being a goal setter would do any good. I say try to find a way to measure your work so you can set goals.
go the extra mile and impress your boss. Goals are key in job loss prevention.
6. Build a network of friends and acquaintances in your job and at your workplace. Be likable and helpful to everyone that you can. Some may call this
office politics but I call it job loss prevention. Someday you may need their help at work and they will be more than willing to give it to you.
7. Always keep improving your mind and your skills at work and at home. It shows a lot of ambition to your employer if you’re willing to
improve your job skills on your own time. On the other side of the coin If you do get laid off from your job you have that much more to offer your next employer when you go to work for them.
8. Have a good sense of humor at work. People love to laugh it makes the time a work seem to go more quickly. Don’t try using profanity to make people laugh. You never know who may be listening. If you get nothing else out of these job loss prevention tips.
GET THIS! In today's politically correct work world a dirty joke or comment can cost you your job.
9. Participate in social activities at your work and outside of your
work with fellow employees. This is all part of networking and job loss prevention. Others can get to know you better outside of the job environment but make sure you act
appropriately, all of the job loss prevention tips in the world can't help if you act like a jerk.
Especially to those who may have control over your job and handle the hiring and firing at work.
10. If you make a mistake on the job admit it. Show your employer that you are willing to own up to your mistakes and will work out a solution. Then take actions so those mistakes don’t happen again. Another work

11. Volunteer for special work related and non work related jobs, committees and projects to become noticed at work. We fall into the same debate here
again. I say that this is just good networking and a tactic for job loss prevention. You may say this is office politics. OK lets say that this is office politics, sometimes you need to play the game when you face a possible job layoff at work or someone else is in competition for your job.
12. Whether you have a job title at work or not make up a Auto Signature file
for your e-mail with your job title or job description in it.. If you don't have a job title at work, make up a simple descriptive job title. Make sure any time that you send an e-mail at work you attach that signature file with your job description and your job title. It works like an electronic business card. People constantly need to see your name, your job title and your job description. It’s like advertising you and the job you do. It's like politics or if you want to call it office politics, it doesn't matter you have to keep your message
and what you do at work in front of people. One of the worst things you can do at a company is to not have people know
who you are and what your job is. If key people don't know your job title and what you do at your job they may feel that your job is
not necessary. At that point a job loss prevention strategy is useless. Also it doesn't matter what your job position or your job title is you should
also have a paper business card that you can hand out. Just like your electronic
signature file your paper business card should contain all of the normal stuff like name, address, phone etc: but you need to also include your job title and your job description.
Here is a site I found that will give you 250 business cards for free. Of course they hope you will give them printing
work in the future but there is no obligation to get the free business cards. Don't buy any, 250 should be more than enough to start your job loss prevention
strategy. You may laugh but when it comes to Job loss prevention you need to promote yourself. Just like a politician in the world of office politics.
13. Get your jobs done on time. Make commitments at work and stick to them. Show people that you’re a man or woman of your word. This means a lot in today's job market when many people shown little or no integrity.
14. If you really like where you work, the people you work with and are interested in job loss prevention, work harder and smarter
and longer hours than those around you.
( I know that one was a no brainier ;o) )
15. Working harder and smarter at work needs to be done but it’s critical that
people like you. Take these job loss prevention tips and put together a job loss prevention plan of action. Like I said at the
beginning of these work tips creating a job loss prevention plan of action is great but you will need to "LIVE" and always have
that job loss prevention attitude. Reminder: take the time to read or listen to “
How to win friends and influence people “ by Dale Carnegie. Even if
you work great with people you can pick up a lot of good job loss prevention information and get even better. Get a copy here or get it from your local library....but get it.
